Movie - Outland
As I continue to build the collection of media on my Plex server, this last week I added a couple of SciFi movies. One of them was Outland.
Released in 1981, it stars Sean Connery and Peter Boyle, who face off in a tense thriller. Set on Io, a moon of Jupiter, in a mining camp, “company town” environment.
Sean Connery rotates in as a Federal Marshall on the mining camp, and he quickly stumbles into a drug epidemic implicitly sanctioned by the management. The side effect of this narcotic - a “super” amphetamine analog - is that it drives psychosis in heavy users, and some bizarre ways of committing suicide.
It is not a great movie, hardly one of Connery’s finest, but it is passable. Even enjoyable.
Like most SciFi movies there are huge holes in the physics and reality, but I long ago learnt to disengage that part of my brain and just watch.
When I first saw this, way back, it was on a first date. I mentioned that I wanted to see a Science Fiction movie, and she picked this one.
Needless to say, it wasn’t a really good first (or any) date movie. There was only one date in that case. I can’t even remember her name.
I rate this a solid 2.5 out of 5 stars.
