Music Appreciation: Mohini Dey

Circa 2017, when I was still on Facebook, I looked for great guitar players, and especially on the hunt for women who played. I found many greats. Gretchen Menn, Alexandra Zerner, and many more. But one that stuck out to me was Esani Dey. A young woman from India, she had chops, and she killed it. I eagerly watched everything she posted. But turns out that music runs in that family, because her sister, Mohini Dey was gaining acclaim as a bass player extraordinaire.

I never saw much of her because I don’t think she did much on Facebook. But I heard snippets. She toured with Steve Vai, and appeared on many iconic albums as a session player.

For good reason, she is AMAZING. She plays a lot of hard jazz, and when I saw that she had a new album, I had to check it out.

This is one of the tracks, and god-damn I was floored. I mashed the “Buy Now” button on Bandcamp so fast, because I wanted to support her work. It is jazz in the style of Panzer Ballet, with a hard edge, and amazing chops, as well as tuneful melodies.

Listen for your self.

She is an up and coming talent on par with the inestimable Victor Wooten:

And if you’ve never heard Panzer Ballet, let this be a good starting point. Take Five:
