Lazy Scammers: Text Phishing

I miss the days of the Nigerian prince scams. At least they were entertaining. Alas, GenAI and some skeevy operators are making it trivial to attempt to scam people. Stay alert!

I get a lot of "smishing" scam attempts. Most are laughable, but occasionally, I get one that is just bonkers.

Yesterday, I got this "urgent" text message, purportedly from Amazon that some product that I ordered was "not up to snuff" and that I should go to their site to fix this heinous situation.

The Smish attempt

First, Amazon truly doesn't give one iota of a fuck about whether they send you crap. Seriously, I have gotten some seedy shit from them.

Second, the link uses the Twitter link shortener (indicated by the t.co). That tells me this is likely some basement dwelling incel republicunt MAGA douchebag who is using the Twitter "Grok" AI to generate this shite.[1]

Third, if Amazon were to issue a refund, they just do it seamlessly, crediting it back to whatever card I used to pay.

Fourth, Amazon DOES NOT HAVE MY PHONE NUMBER...

No fucko, any inconvenience is that you sent this egregious smish to my cellphone and caused me to have to read this garbage.

Folks: Never click on links in SMS messages, especially from people or numbers you don't know.
